If you are starting with AWS, two certifications come up again and again: Cloud Practitioner and Solutions Architect – Associate. They are not competitors. They sit at different levels, and the right first step depends on where you are today.
What each certification is
- Cloud Practitioner (foundational): explains what the cloud is, how AWS is organised, how pricing and billing work, and the core services at a high level. It is about understanding, not designing.
- Solutions Architect – Associate: teaches you to design secure, resilient and cost-effective systems on AWS: networking with VPC, compute, storage, databases, load balancing, serverless and disaster recovery.
Start with Cloud Practitioner if
- You are a student or fresher with no cloud exposure.
- You come from a non-IT or non-technical background and want to understand the vocabulary first.
- You work in sales, support or management and need to talk about cloud confidently.
Go straight to Solutions Architect – Associate if
- You already work in IT (support, testing, system or network administration, development).
- You are comfortable with basic networking and want hands-on, job-relevant skills.
- You want to build and design, not only understand.
Can you do both?
Yes, and many learners do. Cloud Practitioner topics are the foundation of the Associate course, so completing them first makes the Associate material easier. Our AWS Dual Certification Combo covers both in one program.
Practical advice
- Certification alone does not get you a job. Employers look for people who can actually build, so choose a course with real labs.
- Practise in a real AWS account (with billing alerts on) after every topic.
- Read the syllabus before you enrol: Cloud Practitioner or Solutions Architect – Associate.
